Summer is a great time to get out and explore the world around you. Its also the ideal time for you and your 4-legged friends to get up and shake off the winter blues and shed those few extra pounds that have kept you warm all winter. But walking can get monotonous,  so here are 4 activities that can help you and your pooch get in shape and have fun doing it!

1) Kayaking- this activity can be fun and lead to some amazing adventures. Some tips; first make sure your dog likes to swim and is equipped with a life jacket. Start by teaching your pup to get in and out of the kayak, then move to short outing in calm water with low boat traffic. Even if your pup doesn’t spend much time swimming along side the kayak they will still enjoy the mental stimulation of this activity.

2) Bootcamp- this can be a great way to get in shape and teach your dog great obedience. If you don’t have a club in your area, then get together with a few friends and start by going on some trail hikes.  Create a Facebook group with other owners who have animals with weight loss goals. You can exchange tip and encourage each other – this might be something your veterinary team can help you with! They will definitely have other clients working to get their dogs in shape, too.

3) Fetch Circuits- for any owner looking for a more intense training exercise try fetching circuits. The concept is easy and with a little planning it can be great cardio for you and your pup. Start by picking your exercises; burpees, jumping jacks, plank, or push-ups for example, then toss the ball and get as many reps in before your dog returns the ball. Then start again!

4) Bubbles- looking for a low impact activity that is fun and easy whether you live in the country or city? Get some dog safe bubbles and let your dog start trying to catch them. This is a great activity for children playing in the yard with the large family dog or a senior owner living in an apartment with a lap dog that needs a little more activity.
